They were at every birthday for nine years.

Now you have not spoken since March.

No fight. No final conversation. No moment either of you could circle on a calendar and call the end.

That is the strange thing about friendship breakups.

Romantic heartbreak usually gets a scene, a sentence, and a shared understanding of what happened. Friendship breakups often leave you with a quiet group chat and eighteen months of evidence to examine.

So you go looking for the event. The slow reply. The invitation you missed. The thing you must have said wrong.

Often, there isn’t one.

A while back, one of our Detroit regulars said the quieter question out loud:

“Am I part of the group because I keep showing up, or because you want me here?”

Showing up and being wanted are two different forces. Both can be operating at the same time. Most of us never separate them, so when a friendship starts to fade, we don’t know whether the affection disappeared or the structure around it did.

We only know that the messages slowed down. The plans stopped making it onto the calendar. A person who once knew everything now knows whatever made it to Instagram.

Contact disappearing tells you something is missing.

It doesn’t tell you what.

Let’s dive in. 🧡

Section divider introducing photos from Board Walks chapters around the world

From our walking villages in 16+ cities around the world:

A group from The Board Walks gathers together in an open green park in San Francisco, California during a community walk.

Sacramento under the Tower Bridge, grateful for a rare dry 75 today. 🐾

San Francisco out in the open field, growing every week. 🧡

A small group from The Board Walks poses together at a trailhead fence surrounded by trees in Nashville, Tennessee during their fifth walk.

Nashville Walk #5. Two strangers joined today and left exchanging numbers. 📱

Detroit Walk #31. Grey skies, big crew, no shortage of energy. ⛅

(Don’t see your city? We post the photos on Instagram or each Meetup group after the walk. Otherwise this email would be longer than a CVS receipt.)

🏆 A woman came to her first Detroit walk recently, about sixty-five years old, and our host Izzy says she arrived hot and spicy. She told him she'd been looking for this kind of thing for about twenty years.

Twenty years of looking for a room like this one.

🏆 In London, a man left feeling deeply connected to a walker he never spoke to. She had shared something in the opening circle about heading out for a run and catching herself: wait, what am I running from?

He walked near her for five miles and never exchanged a word with her.

Host Cristina's read: sometimes it isn't what you say. One person going first changes people who never even talk to them.

🏆 A first-timer in Detroit admitted she had sat in her car deciding whether to get out.

She got out.

Afterward, she said she could never have imagined talking that easily with a group of strangers.

Section divider including lessons and stories we’ve learned on The Board Walks

A walker in Austin brought this question to an opening circle in June:

“Adult friendships and friendship breakups. Do you see them coming? Are they abrupt? How do you cope?”

That question became our newest Trail Tale.

A friendship going quiet doesn’t automatically mean it ended. It tells you something is missing.

Sometimes the room disappeared. Sometimes the effort stopped being shared. Sometimes trust was damaged.

Those are three different problems, and they should not receive the same response.

The new Trail Tale gives you four questions to help tell them apart, includes a sentence you can send when you need an honest answer, and names one common piece of friendship advice we hope you won’t follow.

Section divider introducing topics people have brought to the walks

This week on The Board Walks, people brought these topics:

  1. "How much of your personality is chosen versus inherited from the people you grew up around?"

  2. "When is moving on healthy, and when is it just escape?"

  3. "What's something about you that people wouldn't guess from a first impression?"

  4. "How do you know if you actually enjoy something, or if you're just used to it?"

  5. "If you had the chance to thank someone who changed your life, would you?"

Screenshot these. Steal with pride. Bring one to your next dinner party to shift the conversation from “meh” to marvelous.

Section divider highlighting news and updates from The Board Walks

Quick hits:

🧡 Mystery solved.

Last week, we asked which newsletter had sent a wave of new readers to one of our Trail Tales.

It was Brad Barrett, co-founder and co-host of ChooseFI, who shared the piece with his newsletter audience.

Brad, thank you for introducing so many curious humans to our work. Watching them pour into our little corner of the internet absolutely made our week. 🧡

🤝 Know a brand we should meet?

We’re seeking values-aligned sponsors to help bring our free walks to more cities. If you know someone on our partner list, a warm introduction would be incredibly helpful.

Right now, it’s the single most impactful way you can support our mission of making real connection a weekly habit again.

🌍 We’re looking for great hosts in New York City, Los Angeles, and London.

Know someone warm, curious, and naturally good at bringing people together? Send them our application. Most chapters begin the same way: one person thinks of the right person and forwards one link. Host with us →

Section divider inviting readers to attend a Board Walk

Saturday morning. Five miles. No phones, no pitching, no pressure to perform.

We're not organizing walks.

We're rebuilding one of humanity's oldest technologies: the village. 🧡

Have a whimsical week,

Founders of The Board Walks

P.s. If you know someone whose nervous system has been holding its breath (the friend who keeps saying they're "too busy" or "too tired") send them this. That's how the villages come back. One conversation at a time.

What’s alive in The Board:

There's a specific kind of loneliness that comes with growth.

You've built a full life. You're surrounded by good people. And there are still parts of you that don't get to exist in the rooms you're in.

We call it the Hallway Period: trying every door, hoping one opens into something real.

The Board is the room at the end of that hallway.

Monthly themed Salons. Spontaneous conversations between work meetings. A member directory filled with people who would rather ask a real question than make small talk.

Where your dues go: the public walks are free in every city and always will be. The Board is what keeps them that way.
