You remember every invitation you sent that went unanswered.
You probably do not remember the ones you left unanswered yourself.
That asymmetry does more quiet damage to adult friendship than shyness ever could.
Two people keep score of their own courage. Neither can see the other person's.
Nobody is doing anything wrong. Both are busy. Both are waiting for evidence that the effort would be returned.
The first hangout usually arrives with help from somewhere else. The second one asks somebody to risk caring first.
That is where a promising friendship often stalls.
This week is about that exact moment, and how to move through it without trying harder.
Let's dive in. 🧡

From our walking villages in 20+ cities around the world:

Aveiro may take the cake for the best view a Saturday morning walk could ask for. 🇵🇹

London celebrated Cristina’s final walk as host. A beautiful photo to close a beautiful chapter. 💐

A little rain was no match for Miami’s Saturday morning rhythm. 🌦️
(Don’t see your city? We post the photos on Instagram or each Meetup group after the walk. Otherwise this email would be longer than a CVS receipt.)

🏆 Austin turned a driverless interruption into community lore.
A Waymo rolled into the middle of the opening circle, and roughly forty walkers immediately gained a story they will probably still be telling at Walk #300.
🏆 Aveiro reached Walk #20 with a dozen people.
Three were first-timers. Twenty Saturdays in, the chapter is still making room for someone new.
🏆 Nashville set a new high before anyone reached the trail.
The chapter recorded its largest signup list yet, a small signal that more people are finding the invitation.

Most of us know more people we could plausibly be friends with than we think.
The coworker. The person at the gym. The friend of a friend who made you laugh at dinner.
The gap is not the first hangout. That one usually arrives with help from somewhere else. The gap is the one after it, when the scaffolding disappears and somebody has to risk caring first.
This week's Trail Tale offers five ways to make that second time easier, none of which ask anyone to try harder.

This week on THE BOARD WALKS, people brought these topics:
“What quality do you look for in a friend?”
“What is something you have learned about yourself recently?”
“What do you admire in others, and what do you admire in yourself?”
“How do you know what your non-negotiables are?”
“What is your weird or unusual form of self-care?”
Screenshot these. Steal with pride. Bring one to your next dinner party to shift the conversation from “meh” to marvelous.

Quick hits:
📚 Four Thursdays. Four new Trail Tales.
September’s series starts with the awkward little gap between meeting someone you like and seeing them again. The rest of the month goes after empty weekends, disappearing third places, and friendships stretched by busy lives. Explore the Trail Tales archive →
🌍 We’re looking for great hosts in New York City and Los Angeles, and a full-time chapter host in Austin.
Know someone warm, curious, and naturally good at bringing people together? Most chapters begin the same way: one person thinks of the right person and forwards one link.
🤝 We’re also looking for co-hosts in Atlanta, Philadelphia, and London.
These chapters are already walking. A co-host helps lead the opening circle, welcome first-timers, and cover the occasional Saturday when the lead host needs one off.

What’s alive in The Board:
Everything above is about building a second time out of nothing.
Inside The Board, the second time is already built.
The same people return all year, across cities. You do not have to reintroduce yourself, retell your story, or explain the thing you are building from the beginning every time.
The Board is not designed to help you collect more contacts. It gives the good conversations you are already having somewhere to go.
It is application-only and deliberately small, because a room stops working as a room when you can no longer hold everyone in your head.
If you have ever left a meaningful conversation wishing there were a natural next one, this is what we built for you.
Next Salon: September 17. Details coming soon.

The first hangout can be luck. Friendship needs somewhere for the next one to happen.
Saturday morning already exists.
Come alone, or bring the person you have been meaning to know better. Walk five miles beside curious humans with your phone in your pocket and nothing to perform.
It is free, it happens every week, and it is waiting in 20+ cities.
Have a whimsical week,
Founders of THE BOARD WALKS
